Shcheglushka and Bologna

Life in Ukraine is still a bit different from the average European one, but nevertheless it's great to realize that now young people have a lot more opportunities to travel abroad, to go for an internship, to study in prestigious European universities.

The reason we bought our tickets to Venice was the promise Yuliya had given to her closest friend Shcheglushka (aka Nataliya Shcheglova) to visit her during her studies in Bologna University. And, besides, this provided us with chance to see Venice, a place one should definitely visit once in his/her life.

The plan was simple - coming Saturday morning to Venice, spend a day sightseeing, catch the train to Bologna, meet Shcheglushka, go out together, discover Bologna on Sunday, party, sleep, catch Monday morning train to Venice, see the rest, travel to some island outside Venice, swim, spend a night in the hotel and catch a noon flight back to Prague on Tuesday. Anyways, was really great!

Planned - done (smile)!

After having spent an incredible day in Venice (posts coming soon), we caught a local train to Bologna where we were met by Shcheglushka. Straight from the railway station we headed to the city centre for an Italian dinner and wine. The place was very local and very cosy with the owner serving us the food and trying to speak to us with his very bad English (smile). Yuliya had gnocci, I had pasta bolognese and Shcheglushka has melon with prosiutto. What looked weird, tastes incredibly tasty! And sparkling house wine was cold and great in a hot summer evening in Italy (smile).

We walked a bit more around the city, got onto the main square which was very dark with lots of people and public film viewing, understood what needed to be seen the next day and caught the last bus to the student dorms. There we celebrated a bit more our arrival and went to catch some sleep before tomorrow's adventures (at least I was the first one to do that).

All the next day was dedicated to uncovering Bologna's charms. The city looked incredible! I was amazed to see so many walkways (porticos) and arches. They were everywhere, in almost each building, kilometres of them. Very handy if it rained and very atmospheric... Something very special which made Bologna so unique.

The impression after a half a day walk and climb on the highest tower was that the whole town was made of the same colour... Looked just amazing!

In the morning we had a coffee on the square next to a huge cathedral and uncovered the system how the Italian bars and restaurants worked - we were charged almost 3 times the original price for the opportunity to sit outside (smile).

We walked through many squares and along many streets. It was very hot outside and streets were not very crowded at all. Shcheglushka took us to the best local ice cream place... and we tried the best gelatto ever!

After more walking and at the beginning of the evening time we ended up in 2 places having "vino de la casa, bianco, uno litro" (or more...). The evening was hot and quiet, we were sitting outside in a small local restaurant having all the free snacks which were coming with great cold wine served in the jars... Life seemed great and so it was!

Close to midnight we ended up in the place which brought to perfection our Bologna/Italy experience - a true local pizzeria... What could be better!..

The morning was a bit hard, but we woke quite early and after saying "bye" caught the train to Venice to spend 1 more full day there - listening to jazz music at St.Marco square, taking the boat ride, swimming in the sea and visiting an incredibly cute Burano island...

And also in Bologna I was taking lots of photos of girls...

and even managed to get into the picture sometimes as well (smile)...
